Image upload issues
Fix studio upload problems — PNG, JPEG and WebP validation, the 5 MB limit, fixed-effect resizing and transparent areas turning white.
Supported files
For the studio's Convert and fixed-effect tools:
- PNG, JPEG or WebP
- Up to 5 MB (5,242,880 bytes)
Other formats (HEIC, GIF, TIFF, SVG, PDF…) need converting first. On iPhone, export or share as JPEG.
The studio checks the file type and size in your browser before preparing the preview or sending a conversion request. Unsupported formats, empty files, files over the limit and images the browser cannot decode share this message:
Choose a valid PNG, JPEG or WebP image smaller than 5 MB.
Despite the wording “smaller than,” the size check accepts a file exactly at the 5,242,880-byte limit if it passes the other checks. The file picker is also restricted to PNG, JPEG and WebP.
The AI server independently validates PNG, JPEG or WebP image data and the decoded 5 MB limit. Fixed-effect requests instead send a normalized PNG and have separate server-side PNG, dimension and request-size limits. A rejected server request shows “Check your prompt, image and generation settings, then try again.” for AI, or “Check your image and effect settings, then try again.” for fixed effects — not a format-specific HEIC or GIF message.
These studio limits are not the rules for the separate file-upload service.
File too large
Resize or re-export the image below 5 MB, then check its actual file size. Fixed effects scale images to at most 512 px on the longest edge anyway. Reducing dimensions can help, but no particular pixel dimensions guarantee a file will fit the byte limit.
“My image got smaller”
That's expected for fixed effects: source images are resized proportionally to at most 512 px on the longest edge. Small source images are not enlarged during this preparation. ASCII PNG dimensions come from its character grid rather than exactly matching the prepared source. For AI models, the reference image is resized when required by the selected model's limits.
Transparent background turned white
For fixed effects, transparent areas become white before the effect is applied, and the output is opaque. This is not a guarantee about all AI output. If your logo or sticker is light-colored on transparency, it may disappear against white — add a dark background in an editor before uploading, or use Invert brightness in the ASCII tool.
Nothing happens after choosing a file
- Check the file error shown beneath the upload field.
- Sign in before running the conversion; selecting a local file alone does not start a server upload.
- Try a different browser or disable extensions that block uploads.
- Refresh and try again.
Permissions
Only upload images you have permission to edit. See the Terms and Privacy Policy.
Why did my image fail to generate?
What to do when an Artgen AI generation or conversion fails — sign-in, model, credits, exact error messages and credit-return limitations.
Output looks wrong
Fix blurry, small, noisy or misaligned Artgen results — fixed-effect size, ASCII alignment, AI drift and wrong aspect ratio.
