How to use Artgen — sign in, Create from text vs Convert an image, free fixed effects, and where downloads go.

You can browse Artgen without an account. To run a conversion or generate with AI, sign in first. Three browser ASCII tools — text to ASCII art, ASCII to image and copy-and-paste drawings — run on the page and do not require sign-in.

Two ways to make an image

Create — describe what you want in a text prompt, pick a style and an AI model, then generate. AI generation uses credits; check the cost shown in the studio before you run it. See Pricing for plans and credit packs.
Convert — upload a PNG, JPEG or WebP and apply either a fixed effect (free with sign-in, no credits) or AI reimagine (uses credits).

Six styles have free fixed effects: pixel art, ASCII, cyanotype, risograph, pop art and pointillism. For those styles you can also switch to AI reimagine when you want a newly drawn version.

First run (fixed effect)

Sign in and open Convert or a tool page such as image to ASCII or photo to pixel art.
Upload an image (or try the sample). Uploads: PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 5 MB. For fixed effects, images are resized to at most 512 px on the longest edge; transparent areas become white.
Adjust the effect settings, then click Convert image.
Download the result before you leave or refresh — on-page history lasts only for the current session.

First run (AI create)

Open Create or an AI style tool (for example oil painting).
Sign in, choose a published model, and write a prompt (subject, setting, mood). Follow the character limit shown beside the prompt field; it depends on the selected model.
Pick a canvas ratio if the studio shows one, confirm the credit cost for that model, then generate.
Download the image before closing the session.

Is Artgen free to try?

You can read the gallery and tool pages without signing in. The six fixed effects are free with sign-in and do not use credits. AI generation needs sign-in, a compatible published model and enough credits — details on Pricing.
